Shell Energy Pavillion

Shell Energy Pavilion

This outdoor expo -- housed in a gorgeous, Tom Hennes-designed structure -- explores our energy future from three key angles. The first concerns consumption, and innovative ways to create fuel efficiencies. The second looks at options for energy production -- wind, solar, geothermal and more. And the third looks at innovations -- from nanotechnology to mesh networks -- that can change the playing field in surprising ways. Sponsored by Shell, whose provocative lunchtime discussion in 2008 -- “Where were you when the oil ran out?” -- still has people talking.

Designed by KieranTimberlake, the AIA 2008 Firm of the Year, and built by LivingHomes, the Kohler LivingHome integrates a comprehensive environmental program designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification. The Idea House at TED will also feature innovative products of all kinds that showcase the latest thinking in green design. LivingHomes is a leader in sustainable, prefabricated design and developed the first LEED Platinum home in the country. The Kohler LivingHome will remain behind after TED, as a temporary exhibit for the city of Long Beach.

Immersa-Dome

Take a thrilling ride in the Immersa-Dome without ever having to leave the comfort of the Riviera Resort. It's the world's first multi-sensory, projection-based virtual reality system. Climb in, lower the dome over your head, and let yourself be transported as you watch vivid CGI or hi-def video with both front and peripheral views and stereo surround-sound. Simulated gusts of wind will blow through your hair, and you'll smell the time-triggered scents of another world.

Crochet Cactus Garden

Crochet Cactus Garden

The Crochet Cactus Garden is a group work, curated by TED2009 speaker Margaret Wertheim, and incorporating pieces by 10 collaborators from around the world. A follow-on to the Crochet Coral Reef -- which has appeared in galleries worldwide -- the Garden was inspired by the desert landscapes of California and the delicate wonder of living cactii. The forms on display at TED represent a dazzling variety of species, and were created using a new hyperbolic crochet technique developed only recently by a mathematician. During her TED talk, Wertheim will take us inside the cactus garden, and explain the fascinating experimental mathematics that gives life to these complex forms.
